Road Games (1981)

In this thoroughly engaging thriller, the game of the title is one of “cat and mouse” set on the lonesome highways of the Australian outback: but who is the cat and who is the mouse?

Stacy Keach stars as Pat Quid, the long-haul truck driver who sees more than he’s supposed to when the trash is collected one morning across the street from his 18-wheeler. Radio reports of a hitchhiker murderer on the lose fuel his suspicions, and it doesn’t take long for him to cast his eye on a likely suspect. The game begins when he realizes his likely suspect is also watching him.

Jamie Lee Curtis (fresh from her Halloween breakout) co-stars as a hitchhiker turned amateur detective after she accepts a ride from Quid and initially suspects he’s behind the string of killings. Together they try to piece together the few clues they have in hopes of proving to themselves and the authorities that they know the identity of the real killer.

We may think we know what’s going on in Road Games (or at least we think Quid thinks he knows), but it soon becomes apparent that we’re not absolutely sure, because Quid’s not absolutely sure. And so the real mystery of Road Games is in Quid himself. Should we trust him? Will he trust himself? Is he right about the identity of the killer, or does he just have an overactive imagination? Road Games will keep you wondering up until the very end.
